Summer Hill Orcas Group Descriptions
Beginner’s Squad – Pods (8 & Under): The requirements for this group are that the swimmers be substantially over their fear of water and be able to swim 25 yards unassisted. We will teach the basics of all four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Also, streamlining, pullouts, dives and wall turns will be taught. There will be some conditioning work, with swimmers learning how to use a kickboard and to kick properly. Coaches will instruct by a number of group and individual methods. At times the coaches will instruct from the sides with age-appropriate language; at other times there will be out-of-the-water instruction, manually manipulating their limbs; finally, the instructor will get in the water with the swimmers helping to instruct them. At this age, half an hour is best for concentration. They will meet two or three times a week from 3:30 to 4 p.m.
Non-Competitive Squad: These are swimmers that have learned the rudiments of all 4 strokes. They shall have the strokes refined. They also shall have focused instruction on the dives, pullouts, and turns. There shall be rigorous workouts with the swimmers swimming 2, 3, or 5 days per week. This is a group for all swimmers not wanting to compete in meets.
Junior Competitive Squad: (10 & Under) This is the group which either is more advanced in their skill levels or conditioning or have the ambition to be as successful as possible. They shall have separate workouts in preparation of their going to one meet a month. While conditioning is more important with this group, there will still be a heavy emphasis on reinforcing the correct technique of dives, turns and strokes. These swimmers shall have as their ultimate goal receiving Qualifying Times (QTs) for the Short Course and Long Course State Meets in the winter and summer. They shall swim 3 or 5 times a week.
Senior Competitive Squad: (11 & Up) This group shall be totally committed to swimming at the highest levels, with the swimmer not only interested in qualifying for the state meets but also in receiving Sectional cuts and being competitive in Georgia and beyond. They shall be expected to compete at least once a month, more if possible, as well as competing in the State Meet. There shall be 2 days of dry land on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Conditioning shall be varied but rigorous. Swimmers at this level should expect that they shall be swimming at the highest levels possible. Therefore, a genuine and personal ambition is an absolute requirement. They shall swim 3 or 5 times a week.
*Required Equipment for all swimmers: fins, kickboard, and goggles
